The Esigela SA Learners Book Initiative is a literary program launched by KwaziThina Publishers to promote literacy, bridge the gap in African storytelling, and empower South African learners to become published authors. Background

The Esigela SA Learners Book Initiative was first piloted at Toli Senior Secondary School in Lusikisiki in 2022. The program's success led to its expansion, with the goal of reaching more schools and learners across South Africa.

Program Objectives

Literacy

Promote literacy and a love for reading among South African learners.

Provide a platform for learners to express themselves through creative writing.

Program Components

  • 1. Read Aloud Day Celebrations: Organize annual Read Aloud Day events in participating schools to promote literacy and a love for reading.
  • 2.Reading Campaigns: Conduct regular reading campaigns in schools to encourage learners to develop a reading habit.
  • 3.Creative Writing Workshops: Host creative writing workshops for learners, providing guidance and support to help them develop their writing skills.
  • 4.Book Publishing: Publish books written by learners, providing them with the opportunity to become published authors.
  • 5. Partnerships and Collaborations: Foster partnerships with schools, educators, literary organizations, and other stakeholders to promote the initiative.

High School Career Expo

KwaziThina Publishers, under the Esigela SA Learners Book Initiative banner, co-hosts the High School Career Expo in partnership with Align With God's Purpose NPO. This annual event aims to empower high school learners with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration needed to make informed career choices.

High School Career Expo Success Stories

  • Toli Senior Secondary School learners wrote and published a book titled "Surviving a Global Pandemic" in 2022, featuring a collection of short stories that share lessons learned during the pandemic.
  • 89 learners participated in the pilot program, demonstrating the initiative's potential to engage and inspire young writers
  • KwaziThina Publishers, under the Esigela SA Learners Book Initiative banner, won an Avbob Trolley Library for Luqoqweni J.S.S. Out of 7,000 applications, only 500 were selected, making this a remarkable achievement.

Future Plans


Expand the initiative to reach more schools and learners across South Africa

Establish partnerships with literary organizations and stakeholders to promote the initiative.

Develop a digital platform to showcase published works and provide resources for learners and educators.
